Which dog is the right dog for you? It is very important that you do your research. We can help you sift through the mass of information you will find.
Below are a few questions to think about as you begin your search. Answering these questions as you conduct your research will lead you to breeds that will best suit your needs and lifestyle. This will help you and your dog to be happy hunters.
- What type of home environment can you offer your dog? Will your dog be an indoor dog, an indoor/outdoor dog, or simply an outdoor dog? What type of housing will your dog have? What type of exercise and exercise area will you offer your dog? Do you expect to have more than one dog at a given time?
- What are your expectations for the dog? Are you looking to field trial, pleasure hunt, or something in between? What type of hunting do you plan on doing? Do you want to hunt game farm or wild birds? Will you be doing waterfowl hunting?
Now that you narrowed down the breeds that would best suit your needs, do some more research. We recommend visiting various kennels. Meeting dogs will help you to choose one breed.
After you have chosen a breed, visit more kennels. If possible, meet both parents of your potential new pup. Have the owners take them out in the field so you can see their hunting ability for yourself. (FYI, offspring tend to exhibit more of the dam's traits than the sire's.) Don't be afraid to ask for references. Bottom line: it is so important to talk with as many people as possible before purchasing your new pup.
