FIELD CHALLENGE OVERVIEW

What is this event all about? The Top Gun Championships is a timed hunt test that challenges both you and your dog. It is comprised solely of the top gun singles where one competitor and one dog competes against other entries to harvest chukar partridge.

The success of the Top Gun Championships is based on its devotion to fairness. Firstly, the Top Guns uses a "v-set" for all bird releases. Secondly, a dog will compete in only one field, per event, throughout the entire tournament. This is due to the fact that a dog may enter twice per day, per event, as long as the handler changes for the second entry, and a competitor may enter four times per day, per event, as long as the dog changes for each entry.

Game Basics:

  • The Top Gun Championships offers various divisions in an attempt to meet the goals of every hunter and dog.
  • Depending on the division entered, an entry consists of two runs. A run is the timed opportunity to be evaluated during the process of harvesting your birds. The run scores are combined.
  • Yes, this event is scored, rather than judged. Some of the areas scored include: birds harvested, solid points for the pointing breeds or flushes for the flushing breeds, full retrieves, shells not used, and of course time not used.
  • The area where a competitor must work his/her dog is approximately a 10-20 acre field. A competitor will have 15 minutes to accomplish his/her task during a run.
  • Each competitor is allowed six shells. However, it is best to only use one per bird harvested.

A more detailed account of the rules is available at the BDC website.
